Dunes Beach Cottage

The Dunes, Amagansett, New York

A charming mid-century beach cottage, settled into the dunes, that has been quietly accumulating character for decades. This 3,000 square foot Alfred Scheffer-designed cottage in Amagansett is a 1950’s original on a generous triple, where the light is extraordinary and the connection to the landscape is immersive.

The approach was one of deep respect for what already existed. The bones of the cottage, with its modest scale and intimate relationship to the dunes outside, was evoked in the unhurried rhythm of its rooms. Interiors were layered with sun-bleached linens, natural textures, and collected pieces.

The pergola living space is a particular highlight: an indoor-outdoor room that blurs the boundary between the cottage and the landscape around it, capturing the essence of what Hamptons coastal interior design can be at its most relaxed and considered. From the kitchen to the master bedroom to the den, every room carries the same quiet sense of place and timelessness.

For clients drawn to historic homes, Hamptons cottages, or the particular beauty of a house with a long life already lived in it, the Dunes Beach Cottage represents an ability to honor a building's story while making it fully ready for the next chapter.
